Hi Doug! Tell us about yourself — how did you get to where you are today and when did you first become interested in design and illustration?

Hey there! I'm Doug Rodas, a creative director and illustrator hailing from the sunny streets of El Salvador and currently based in Toronto, Canada. My journey into the world of design and illustration began with a deep love for music, a passion for storytelling, and a desire to connect with my community. After earning my Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, I delved into the world of branding and commercial illustration. However, feeling the pull of broader horizons, I ventured to Toronto in pursuit of new opportunities and a chance to refine my craft. Now, as a freelance professional, I'm dedicated to creating impactful, community-oriented projects that speak to the heart.

“To all the aspiring artists and designers out there, let me share a little secret: the journey is just as important as the destination.”

How would you describe your aesthetic and how has your design style changed over time?

My aesthetic can be described as a vibrant fusion of colors, textures, and patterns, infused with a handmade touch and a love for typography. Over time, my design style has evolved organically, adapting to different influences and experiences. While there's a consistency in my work's boldness and vibrancy, I enjoy exploring new techniques and approaches to keep things fresh and dynamic.

Are there particular themes you like to explore through your work?

I'm deeply passionate about exploring themes of creativity, equality, diversity, and social inclusion through my work. These are topics close to my heart, and I believe art has the power to spark important conversations and foster understanding.

Your work often features bright colors, textures, and patterns paired with typography — can you walk us through your creative process? How do you choose what style of typography you want to use for each project?

When it comes to my creative process, it's all about finding the perfect balance between form and function. I begin by immersing myself in the project brief and researching relevant visual references. Then, I let my intuition guide the selection of the right mix of colors, textures, and elements to bring the concept to life. Regarding typography, I rely on the project's vibe to steer me, selecting styles that not only complement the overall aesthetic but also enhance the message, ensuring a seamless integration of form and function.

Throughout your career, you’ve worked with a variety of clients including Coca-Cola and Wacom — what’s your approach to creative collaboration on projects with brand partners?

Collaborating with brand partners like Coca-Cola and Wacom has been an incredible experience. My approach to creative collaboration is rooted in open communication, mutual respect, and a shared vision. I strive to understand the client's identity and values, while also bringing my own creative perspective to the table. By working closely together, we're able to create impactful and memorable experiences for their audiences.

What’s your philosophy on the importance of having personal design projects in addition to client work?

Personal design projects are essential for me. They serve as a playground for experimentation, a canvas for self-expression, and a sanctuary for creative exploration. In addition to client work, these projects allow me to stretch my creative muscles, explore new techniques, and dive deeper into topics that resonate with me personally. They are a vital part of my creative process, nurturing my passion for design and fueling my drive to innovate and evolve.

What’s been one of the biggest career lessons you've learned so far?

One of the biggest career lessons I've learned is the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. The creative industry is ever-evolving, demanding flexibility and a willingness to embrace change. By embracing challenges and learning from setbacks, I've grown both personally and professionally. Additionally, I've come to realize the importance of showing your work, even if it's not perfect. Sharing your creations with the world opens doors, invites feedback, and fosters connections within the creative community. It's through this process of sharing and iterating that we grow as artists and designers, continuously refining our craft and pushing the boundaries of what's possible. So, don't be afraid to put yourself out there, embrace imperfection, and trust in the power of your creative voice.

Where do you find creative inspiration? Do you have any favorite design resources?

Well, it often springs from life's quieter moments, you know, like sharing a meal with loved ones or simply lounging around on a lazy day. Those seemingly mundane experiences have this magical way of sparking the most profound ideas. When I need that extra jolt of inspiration, I dive into a rich tapestry of visual references, exploring diverse cultures and historical periods for fresh perspectives and techniques in platforms like Dribbble or Behance. And let's not forget about music — it's like my creative lifeline. Artists like Charli XCX and Nathy Peluso with their eclectic sounds just light a fire in my imagination and breathe life into my work. As for resources, books like "Find Your Artistic Voice" by Lisa Congdon and "Steal Like an Artist" by Austin Kleon are my go-to guides for navigating the twists and turns of the creative journey. They're filled with nuggets of wisdom and encouragement that keep me inspired and motivated.

What advice would you give to artists and designers just starting out?

To all the aspiring artists and designers out there, let me share a little secret: the journey is just as important as the destination. Instead of stressing about honing your skills or building the perfect portfolio, focus on enjoying the ride. Embrace your quirks, explore your interests, and don't be afraid to make mistakes along the way. After all, some of the best ideas come from happy accidents, right? Surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow creatives, seek out mentorship and guidance, and above all, trust in your unique voice and vision. And remember, it's okay to take breaks, have a laugh, and enjoy the process—after all, creativity should be fun!

When you look to the future, what are you excited about?

Looking ahead, I'm absolutely buzzing with excitement for all the adventures that lie ahead. Whether it's diving into new projects, experimenting with different mediums, or making a positive impact in my community, I'm all in. I'm particularly stoked about the opportunity to push the boundaries of my creativity and explore emerging tools and technologies in the industry. From cutting-edge software to innovative design platforms, I can't wait to see how these new tools will shape the future of design and illustration. Each day brings new opportunities for growth, learning, and discovery, and I'm beyond thrilled to see where this wild ride takes me next!
