Hi Minerva! Tell us about yourself - how did you get to where you are today? When did you first become interested in design and illustration?

Hi! My name is Minerva and I’m based in Cancún, Mexico. I’m an illustrator who has collaborated on projects for global clients in advertising, branding, textiles, editorial, and packaging. I became interested in design when I was in high school, and developed a passion for illustration as a child, while spending hours admiring illustrated books.

How would you describe your design style and how has it changed over time?

I've kept the simple faces on my characters, but my overall style has evolved over time. I try to keep up with new illustration trends, but my style can vary depending on the medium and purpose.

Are there particular themes you like to explore through your work?

Yes, I particularly enjoy exploring themes involving women and nature. I’m also interested in addressing social issues like equality, diversity, mental health, social justice, and environmental sustainability.

Your work has appeared in a range of formats, including murals, textiles, packaging, and editorial pieces. What is your creative process like?

My creative process varies depending on the medium. First, I analyze the client’s brief, then I conceptualize and generate ideas through different sketches. Once I choose the concept, I begin working on the final files. Then I receive feedback from the client, and once it's approved, I finalize the project.

Do you have any favorite design tools and resources?

I love using my iPad with the Apple pencil on Procreate, which allows me the flexibility to create anywhere. When I work on my iMac I use my Wacom tablet. These are the tools I use to create my digital illustrations. When experimenting with traditional materials I use gouache, acrylics, colored pencils, and more.

I enjoy listening to podcasts related to culture, lifestyle, and mental health. I’m a big fan of podcasts in Spanish that make me laugh.

Where do you find inspiration?

In nature, books, movies, music, anything I see can spark my creativity.

What advice would you give to designers who are just starting out?

Never stop drawing.
